Disabled/Elderly Transit Options

  • Montgomery County Human Services
    Website lists various transportation options for Montgomery County residents.

  • Village to Village Network
    For a nominal annual fee, persons with disabilities or seniors can obtain transportation to medical appointments, social events, and other. Seniors 90+ years old are free. .

  • MetroAccess Paratransit
    MetroAccess is a shared-ride, door-to-door, paratransit service for people whose disability prevents them from using bus or rail. If you think you may need paratransit service, see their eligibility requirements.

  • Abilities Ride (a new ride for MetroAccess customers)
    This program provides same day service, no shared ride, and is wheelchair accessible. Eligibility determined by Medical Assistance. Service providers are as follows: 1. Regency Taxi featuring $5 flat fare for all trips up to 9 miles. Regency can be reached at (301) 990- 9100 or online at http://reservations.regencytaxi.com/ ; 2. Silver Cab featuring variable fare with $5 covering trips up to 7 miles. Silver Cab can be reached at (301) 277-6000 or online at http://www.coachtransportation.com/ .   • Bethesda Help
    Among other services, Bethesda Help provides transportation, free of charge, to doctor and social-service appointments for elderly or disabled individuals who cannot afford cab fare.

  • Call-A-Bus
    This service is available to all residents of Prince George’s County; however, priority is given to seniors and people with disabilities. Reservations for trips can be made by calling 301-499-8603 (press #1 AND #1 when prompted to make a choice) between 7:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday excluding county holidays. Trips can be reserved up to 14 days in advance but require a minimum of 24 hours. They are equipped to transport people who are ambulatory or use wheelchair. Call – A – Bus also provides transportation for persons requiring dialysis treatment.

  • Daughter for the Day
    This organization’s mission is to address the most fundamental needs of seniors, one of which is providing them with safe and reliable transportation to medical care and to pick up prescriptions allowing them to maintain the highest possible quality of life. Must have enough mobility to get in and out of an automobile. Provides up to 3 hours outing and at least 3 business day notice prior to the appointment.   • Donations from the Heart
    Donations From The Heart offers transportation assistance to those who lack the transportation to get to doctor’s visits and are unable to drive themselves. The program also provides assistance to those transitioning back to work that have come out of half-way houses and temporary housing whose budgets cannot support public transportation costs. Smart Trip Cards and discounted cab service are underway via negotiations with various agencies and transportation companies.   • FISH of Greater Bowie
    FISH is a volunteer organization serving the greater Bowie, Md. area. Provides free transportation to people who need rides to the doctor, dentist, shopping, and other occasional trips. This service is restricted to residents of Bowie area, hence it is required that all rides start in the greater Bowie area. Call 301-262-8479 or e-mail fishofbowie@aol.com for more information.

  • God's Distribution Center, Inc.
    God's Distribution Center is a nonprofit organization formed for charitable purposes. It is not a church. This program aims at helping not only the needy and the disadvantaged but also those who have suddenly found themselves in unfortunate circumstances and difficult times by providing transportation, food and clothing.   • Mercy Medical
    A national nonprofit organization known as America’s Charitable Medical Transportation System. The mission is to ensure that no one in need is denied medical care due to a lack of transportation. Provides travel for low-income patients by providing bus tickets for subway, train tickets for Amtrak or gas cards if a friend can drive or an automobile is available or transport can be provided by a volunteer long-distance driver. Patients (with or without escort) must be ambulatory and require no medical monitoring or care en route. These trips are for non-local medical care or for patients returning home after a distant appointment or hospitalization. The typical trip does not exceed 300 miles.   • TheBus
    Seniors (60+) and persons with disabilities ride TheBus FREE-of-charge during normal operational hours from 6 AM – 7 PM, Monday - Friday. To take advantage of this new program, riders just have to present one form of proper identification - driver’s license, Metro Senior/Metro Disabled/MetroAccess card, or similar ID – to the bus driver. In addition, persons with disabilities with a MetroAccess ID may bring one personal companion with them on board TheBus at no charge.

  • The CSS Advocacy Program By Community Support Systems INC
    This program provides transportation to help low and moderate-income families and senior citizens of the Southern Prince George’s County residents to doctors, Department of Social Services and for job search, coaching and mentoring. They also provide help for families facing homelessness. Call 301-372-1491 to get more information.

  • The Shepherd’s Centers of America (SCA)
    This is a network of interfaith community based organizations that provide meaning and purpose for senior adults. Services are provided exclusively by volunteers, free of charge, to anyone age 50 or older who resides in Prince George’s County. There are no income-level requirements. To request a ride for a medical appointment, call 703-506- 2199 or email info@scmafc.org. Call and leave a message with your name; address and phone number; date; time and estimated duration of medical appointment; and the name and address of the health care provider. If you’re a new client, a Shepherd's Center of McLean-Arlington Falls Church (SCMAFC) volunteer will arrange to visit you to obtain additional information and explain the procedures.

Obtaining a Car

  • Vehicles for Change
    Vehicles for Change empowers families with financial challenges to achieve economic and personal independence through car ownership and technical training. VFC receives 99 percent of its car donations from the public. They repair cars that meet quality standards and award them for as little as $750 to eligible families who are referred by social service agencies.

  • 1-800-Charity-Cars
    They provide donated vehicles to struggling families in need of transportation. The Charity Cars assistance program will provide a vehicle that has been refurbished to ensure both reliability and safety of the vehicle. They may also provide a license plate, the down-payment to pay for insurance bills, a service warranty to help with future repairs, and also case management services to eligible families.
